Electrical appliance safety (IS 302 Part 1:2024) is now mandatory
BIS lists a DPIIT order covering all electrical appliances intended for household, commercial or similar use with a rated voltage up to 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances — explicitly including DC-supplied and battery-operated appliances. The standard is IS 302 (Part 1):2024, the Indian equivalent of IEC 60335-1:2020, which sets the general safety requirements for household appliances.
BIS publishes an illustrative list of more than 90 appliance types, ranging from vacuum cleaners, cooking ranges, ovens, fryers, coffee makers, juicers and food processors to massage appliances, insect killers, electric call bells and furniture with electrically motorised parts. Battery-operated shavers, trimmers, blenders, toothbrushes, heating mats and air purifiers are named separately. The list is illustrative, not exhaustive — products that meet the voltage and use description are covered even if not named.
Who is affected
Manufacturers, importers and brand owners of household and commercial electrical appliances — including battery-operated and DC-powered products, which many businesses wrongly assume are outside appliance safety rules.
What to do
- Check every appliance in your range against the BIS illustrative list and the voltage and use description, not just the product name.
- Confirm whether a product-specific standard or another order also applies to your appliance, and test against all applicable requirements.
- Importers: verify that your overseas factory holds a valid BIS licence covering the exact models you ship.
