Aluminium utensils and beverage cans now need the ISI Mark

BIS lists two aluminium consumer-product standards with enforcement from 1 October 2026: wrought aluminium utensils under IS 1660:2024 (DPIIT), and aluminium cans for beverages under IS 14407:2023 (Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals).

These are separate from the broader Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products QCO, which covers semi-finished aluminium such as sheet, plate, bars and wire — including IS 21 alloys for utensils, due from 1 December 2026.

Who is affected

Utensil manufacturers and importers, beverage-can makers, and beverage brands that buy cans — plus utensil makers who should also check their aluminium input suppliers under the separate aluminium QCO.

What to do

  • Utensil makers: certify finished utensils under IS 1660:2024, and make sure your aluminium sheet or circle suppliers will be licensed under IS 21 by 1 December 2026.
  • Beverage brands: confirm your can supplier holds a valid licence for IS 14407:2023.
