BIS guidance maps wearable glasses and XR devices to CRS product categories
The Registration Department of the Bureau of Indian Standards issued guidance (ref. Reg/2026/G-01) on 13 August 2026 explaining how wearable glasses and extended reality (XR) devices should be applied for under the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.
Under the guidance, audio glasses (wireless audio, calling and music, including an AI voice assistant) go under Wireless Earphones and Headphones. Smart glasses with a camera that takes only photographs go under Digital Camera, while smart glasses that capture both photos and video go under Video Camera. AR glasses (with an overlay display seen through the lenses) and MR glasses go under Extended Reality Products.
For the Extended Reality Products category itself, BIS lists the sub-categories AR Glasses, Other AR Devices, VR Headset, MR Glasses and Other MR Devices. BIS says a separate licence will be granted for each product name in these tables, so one registration cannot cover, for example, both smart glasses and AR glasses.
Who is affected
Brands, manufacturers and importers of smart glasses, audio glasses, AR/VR/MR headsets and similar wearables, and their Authorised Indian Representatives.
What to do
- Match each model to the product category and product name in the BIS guidance before booking lab tests, based on its actual features (audio only, photo camera, video camera or display overlay).
- Budget for separate CRS registrations where your range spans more than one product name.
- Check pending applications filed under a different category and correct them with BIS if needed.
