4.9 kg of non-HUID gold jewellery seized in Tiruchirappalli raids

Two teams from the Bureau of Indian Standards' Coimbatore Branch Office searched M/s Sree Vasavi Jewellers on Big Bazaar Street and M/s Sree Selvithanga Maligai on Periyakadai Veethi in Tiruchirappalli on 21 July 2026. The searches were made under Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, after a tip-off.

Officials found 4.9 kg of gold jewellery, worth about ₹7.35 crore, on display for sale without the six-digit alphanumeric Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID). Gold jewellery must be hallmarked with a HUID before it is displayed for sale, so the stock was seized. In its release, BIS put the penalty at up to one year's imprisonment or a fine of at least ₹1 lakh, extendable to five times the value of the goods, or both.

Consumers can check a HUID in the BIS Care app, which shows purity, article type and the jeweller and hallmarking centre. BIS invited complaints about jewellery without HUID through the app or by email to its Coimbatore office.

Who is affected

Jewellers and jewellery wholesalers in districts under mandatory hallmarking, and hallmarking centres.

What to do

  • Do not display or sell gold jewellery in covered purities until it has a HUID. Send stock to a BIS-recognised hallmarking centre first.
  • Reconcile display stock against HUID records regularly, and check sample HUIDs in the BIS Care app.
