Pressure cooker QCO breach: nine unmarked and two spurious-mark cookers seized in Nagpur
After a complaint, the Bureau of Indian Standards searched Badewale Metals on Jagnath Budhwari Road, Nagpur, on 15 June 2026. The Ministry announced the action on 7 July 2026. Officials found nine domestic pressure cookers with no ISI mark, sold under brands including Apollo, Butterfly, Madona, Master, Yuvraj, Crown, Marlex and Lion Gold.
Two more cookers, branded Alfamatic, carried an ISI mark with no IS number or CM/L number, which BIS treated as spurious. All 11 were seized as evidence for breaching the Domestic Pressure Cooker (Quality Control) Order, 2020 (S.O. 294(E) of 21 January 2020, amended by S.O. 2019(E) of 23 June 2020), read with Sections 17(1) and 17(3) of the BIS Act, 2016.
This case shows a common sign of a fake mark: a genuine ISI mark always comes with the IS number and a CM/L licence number. BIS said further action against the shop is under way and urged consumers to check licences in the BIS Care app.
Who is affected
Utensil and kitchenware retailers, wholesalers and pressure-cooker brands, including small regional brands.
What to do
- Retailers: reject any cooker whose ISI mark is missing the IS number or the CM/L number.
- Brands: keep your licence active and make sure marking on the product and carton matches your licence details.
