S.O. 1246(E) of 10 March 2026 rewrites the CRS order's exemption for highly specialised equipment: under 100 units per model a year plus size, weight or power criteria. In force 15 June 2026.

QCO AmendmentEffective: 15 June 2026

New criteria for exempting highly specialised equipment from the Compulsory Registration Order

MeitY amended the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 through S.O. 1246(E), published in the Gazette of India on 10 March 2026. It replaces Paragraph 8 of the order, first inserted in July 2021, which deals with Highly Specialized Equipment (HSE).

Under the new text, HSE can be exempted from the order on the basis of a specific exemption issued by MeitY, provided fewer than 100 units per model are manufactured or imported in a year, and the equipment meets at least one of four criteria: it runs on a three-phase supply; it runs on a single-phase supply rated above 16 A; it is larger than 1.5 m x 0.8 m; or it weighs more than 80 kg.

The amendment comes into effect from 15 June 2026. The exemption is not automatic: a specific exemption from MeitY is still needed, and goods outside these limits remain subject to normal CRS registration.

Who is affected

Importers and makers of large or low-volume industrial, medical, laboratory and data-centre electronics that fall within a CRS product category.

What to do

  • Check each low-volume model against the 100-unit limit and the power, size and weight criteria.
  • Where a model qualifies, apply to MeitY for a specific exemption before import or sale rather than assuming one applies.
  • Register under CRS any model that does not meet the new criteria.
