MeitY brings smartphone screen protectors under compulsory BIS registration (IS 19348:2025)
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has amended the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 through notification S.O. 5190(E), published in the Gazette of India on 21 September 2026.
The amendment adds a new entry at S. No. 66 of the Schedule: "Screen Protectors for smartphones", which must conform to IS 19348:2025, Glass Screen Protector — Specification. The order applies to these goods with effect from 1 April 2027. From that date, covered screen protectors will need a BIS registration under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) and must carry the Standard Mark with the registration number.
This is the latest in a series of amendments to the 2021 order; the notification lists earlier changes, including S.O. 2204(E) of 5 May 2026 on standalone hard disk drives and S.O. 4182(E) of 26 July 2026. BIS has already listed the product at S. No. 66 on its Scheme-II (Registration) products page.
Who is affected
Manufacturers and importers of glass screen protectors for smartphones, foreign brands selling into India, and online and offline sellers who will stock them after 31 March 2027.
What to do
- Check whether your products fall within IS 19348:2025 and gather product and factory details for each manufacturing location.
- Book testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory early, as lab capacity for a newly notified standard is usually limited in the first months.
- Plan stock so that unregistered screen protectors are not being manufactured, imported or sold after 31 March 2027.
