BIS extends switchover to revised LED lamp standard IS 16102 (Part 1):2026

In a circular dated 31 July 2026 (ref. IS 16102 (Part 1)/02), BIS's Registration Department extended the last date of implementation of IS 16102 (Part 1):2026 to 2 February 2027. All other terms of its earlier guidelines stay the same.

Those guidelines, issued on 24 February 2026, said IS 16102 (Part 1):2012 had been revised and that both versions would run together until 2 August 2026. Existing licensees must submit complete test reports from a BIS-recognised lab for every lead model previously tested to the 2012 version, plus an undertaking for the other series models. Licences that have not switched by the deadline may face cancellation or deletion of models.

Changes in the 2026 edition include coverage of lamps up to 60 W rated input, lamps with non-removable rechargeable batteries, photobiological safety tests and marking, ingress protection tests, abnormal-operation tests and an axial strength test for Edison caps. New applications under the old standard are allowed only up to the implementation date and need a declaration to switch.

Who is affected

CRS licensees and applicants for self-ballasted LED lamps, including Indian factories and foreign manufacturers exporting LED bulbs to India.

What to do

  • List all lead models tested to IS 16102 (Part 1):2012 and book retesting to the 2026 edition well before 2 February 2027.
  • Review designs for the new requirements, especially photobiological safety marking, battery-backed lamps and ingress protection.
  • Submit the test reports and undertaking for series models through the CRS portal.
