Non-ISI deep freezers seized at Flipkart warehouse under Refrigerating Appliances QCO

A team from the Bureau of Indian Standards' Chennai Branch Office searched a warehouse of Flipkart India Private Limited at Alamathi village, Sholavaram, Tiruvallur district, on 18 April 2026. The search was made under Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, with police present. Officials seized eight deep freezers that had no ISI mark and no CM/L licence number.

Deep freezers come under the Refrigerating Appliances (Quality Control) Orders issued by DPIIT. Under those orders, they cannot be stored, sold or displayed for sale without a valid BIS licence and Standard Mark. BIS said it will act against the offender. For a first offence, the penalty is up to two years' imprisonment or a fine of at least ₹2 lakh, rising to ten times the value of the goods, or both.

The head of the Chennai office said BIS will pursue seizure and prosecution, and that storing uncertified goods is an offence even if they have not yet been sold. Complaints can be sent through the BIS Care app or to cnbo1@bis.gov.in.

Who is affected

Online sellers, fulfilment-centre operators and marketplaces handling appliances under QCOs, and importers of refrigeration products.

What to do

  • Sellers: upload a valid BIS licence for each appliance listing and make sure the physical unit carries the ISI mark and CM/L number.
  • Warehouse operators: add a BIS-mark check at inbound receiving for any QCO-covered category.
