Fake ISI mark and licence number found on PVC wires at Hyderabad unit

The Hyderabad Branch Office of the Bureau of Indian Standards raided a cable and wire manufacturing unit in the Charlapally Industrial Area on 23 February 2026. Officials found more than 200 boxes of PVC insulated wires and cables of several brands carrying fake ISI marks. The stock was worth more than ₹5 lakh.

According to BIS, the unit had printed a fake ISI mark and licence number even though it had never obtained a BIS licence. That breaches Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016. The offence is cognizable. It carries up to two years' imprisonment or a fine of at least ₹2 lakh for a first offence, at least ₹5 lakh for repeat offences, and fines of up to ten times the value of the goods. BIS said it will start legal proceedings.

In the same release, BIS noted that standards for 769 products have been made mandatory through QCOs. It urged consumers to check ISI marks, and hallmarks on gold, in the BIS Care app.

Who is affected

Wire and cable manufacturers, traders and electrical contractors who buy from unbranded or new sources.

What to do

  • Before buying, check the CM/L number on every coil in the BIS Care app. A fake mark often uses a real-looking but invalid number.
  • Keep supplier licence copies and invoices on file so you can show due diligence if stock is questioned.
