Why LED lighting is BIS-regulated
LED lighting products combine electrical safety and photometric performance claims (brightness, efficiency, colour rendering) — both of which BIS certification is designed to verify, so consumers get products that are both safe and perform as labelled.
What's covered
Coverage spans LED bulbs and lamps, luminaires (fixtures), and the drivers/control gear that power them. Each is assessed against its own applicable Indian Standard under CRS, since a bulb, a fixture, and a driver are tested differently.
What testing evaluates
Testing covers electrical safety (insulation, thermal performance, construction) and photometric/performance characteristics such as light output and efficiency, evaluated against the applicable Indian Standard for that product category.
The certification process
LED lighting and luminaires are notified electronics/IT goods, so they require BIS CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) registration, not ISI licensing. The process: confirm which of your LED products (bulb, luminaire, driver) needs which standard, prepare manufacturing and quality control documentation, submit samples for testing at a BIS-recognised lab, and file your CRS registration application. Registration is valid for the period granted and must be renewed to stay in force.
What manufacturers should prepare
If your product line spans bulbs, fixtures, and drivers, each needs separate CRS registration against its own standard — one registration does not cover your full LED product range.
FAQs
Does an LED driver need separate registration from the luminaire it powers?
Yes — drivers, bulbs, and luminaires are assessed against distinct standards under CRS, so a product line spanning more than one of these needs registration for each.
Is LED lighting certified under ISI or CRS?
CRS. LED bulbs, luminaires and lighting drivers are notified electronics/IT goods under BIS's Compulsory Registration Scheme, not the ISI licensing route.
How long does LED lighting registration typically take?
Timelines vary by product readiness and documentation. We give a specific estimate after reviewing your product range.
