Furniture standards amended: BIS briefs makers on IS 17635 beds, IS 17632 chairs and IS 17637 finishes

At a 26 May 2026 seminar in Mumbai, BIS took furniture makers through Amendment 1:2025 to IS 17635 and IS 17632 and Amendment No. 2 to IS 17637.

BIS Mumbai seminar explains latest amendments to furniture standards

The BIS Mumbai Branch Office held a Seminar-cum-Manak Manthan on 26 May 2026 at the BIS Western Regional Laboratory, in hybrid mode, on recent amendments and implementation of furniture standards.

The technical sessions covered IS 17637 : 2021 (performance requirements of surface finishes for furniture) with Amendment No. 2, IS 17635 : 2022 (beds) with Amendment 1 : 2025, and IS 17632 : 2022 (general purpose chairs and stools) with Amendment 1 : 2025. BIS also explained the related product manuals, testing procedures and compliance provisions. Members of the Association of Furniture Manufacturers of India (AFMI) and the Association of Furniture Manufacturers & Traders (AFMT) took part.

IS 17632 and IS 17635 are among the standards covered by the furniture Quality Control Order, so licensees and applicants need to test and mark to the amended versions.

Who is affected

Manufacturers, importers and foreign suppliers of beds, chairs, stools and finished furniture, and furniture testing labs.

What to do

  • Get the current amended texts of IS 17632, IS 17635 and IS 17637 and check your designs and test reports against them.
  • Check the latest BIS product manual for your product for any changes to sampling or the scheme of testing.
  • Make sure new test reports for licence applications are issued against the amended standard.
