MeitY's S.O. 2204(E) of 5 May 2026 widens S. No. 50 of the CRS order from USB external HDDs to all standalone hard disk drives (IS 13252 Part 1) from 5 November 2026.

QCO AmendmentEffective: 5 November 2026

MeitY extends compulsory registration to all standalone hard disk drives

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology published notification S.O. 2204(E) in the Gazette of India on 5 May 2026, amending the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.

The entry at S. No. 50 of the Schedule is now "Standalone Hard Disk Drives", tested to IS 13252 (Part 1):2010, Information technology equipment — Safety — Part 1: General requirements. USB-type external hard disk drives, already covered, continue under the existing provisions. For all other standalone HDDs, the order applies from 5 November 2026.

In practice this brings internal and other non-USB standalone drives sold as separate products into CRS. Note that BIS has separately announced the migration of IT products from IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023, so new applicants may wish to consider testing to the newer standard.

Who is affected

Manufacturers, brands and importers of standalone hard disk drives (other than USB external drives already registered), and retailers and online sellers stocking them.

What to do

  • Identify drive models sold as standalone products that are not yet registered and book tests at a BIS-recognised lab.
  • Apply for CRS registration early enough to be granted before 5 November 2026.
  • Hold back imports of unregistered drives that would arrive after that date.
