BIS Mumbai raid recovers 1,057 non-certified toys; criminal complaint to follow
The Mumbai Branch Office of the Bureau of Indian Standards searched M/s Daddy Drones in Goregaon (West), Mumbai on 28 January 2026. Officials seized 1,057 electric and non-electric toys meant for children under 14. None carried the ISI mark, and the firm had no BIS licence.
BIS said it will file a criminal complaint under Section 17 read with Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016. It also warned that it will act against e-commerce platforms found helping to sell such products. For a first offence, the penalty is up to two years' imprisonment or a fine of at least ₹2 lakh, or both. Repeat offences carry a fine of at least ₹5 lakh, and fines can reach ten times the value of the goods.
Toys are covered by the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020, under which no one may make, import, store or sell them without a BIS licence and the ISI mark. BIS asked consumers to check licence status in the BIS Care app and to report suspended, deferred or expired licences there.
Who is affected
Toy retailers, importers, online sellers and the marketplaces that list them.
What to do
- Ask every supplier for a valid toy licence (CM/L number) and check it in the BIS Care app before you buy stock.
- Take down or quarantine any unmarked toys right away. Holding them in a store or warehouse is itself an offence.
